In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
I met with a friend a few days ago to catch up. As we were talking, he began to tell me he was feeling complacent and board. I was perplexed by his confession.
With anything, you have to identify the cause in order to find the solution. As I began to ask questions to try to help him find the reason, I started to realize he is suffering from the same condition many are suffering from.
The condition is self.
I asked him if he was giving thanks every day, if he was starting his day with thanksgiving and ending his day in the ssme way. He said yes. But his body didn’t agree with the words out of his mouth.
I asked if he was serving God by serving others or if he was just serving himself. Again, ” oh yeah, of course!” Were the words, but as with the lrevious question, his body didn’t agree.
The problem with many of us is we want a quick answer. But, we don’t want the answer to be an issue with us. We want the blame to be somewhere else. This “condition” is more prevalent with men because the hardest thing for us to do is admit we are wrong.
We will lie to ourselves, our wives, our kids, our friends, even God in order to refuse to admit our fault in our drama.
This guy was answering in a way that kept both of us searching for a cause to ultimately never find one. The reason we could never find the cause is because he refused to be honest with himself. He refused to be honest with me. He refused to be honest with God.
One of the biggest lessons God ever taught me was how to be thankful even when my human mind didn’t agree with my Spirit Man.
You see, we don’t like to be thankful for what we have, we only want to be thankful for what we want to be thankful for. We like to pick and choose.
We want to be rock stars, but we are loading trucks. We want to be doctors, but we are construction workers. We want to be leaders, but that other guy got the promotion.
Then, instead of thanking God for His provision and the ability to provide for our families, we become disgruntled. We aren’t living OUR vision. But the problem is, we are looking to live OUR vision instead of God’s.
When we look back through scripture, we see how complacent and disgruntled the Israelites were. These people had lived for decades in bondage. They were slaves. The Egyptians dictated everything in their lives. For generations!
Now they have their freedom, because God provided a way. God sent Moses and gave him the authority. God gave Pharaoh the signs and the plagues to convince him. God redeemed His people. Yet, they were angry and forgot who God is. They forgot what God had done for them. The refused to give thanks for what God gave because it wasn’t their vision for their lives.
This is the same thing my friend suffers from. Its the same issue many of you are suffering from. Stop your whining and negative attitude! Suck it up butter cup! God has a plan! If He is Lord of your life, then you need to trust Him!
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
Stop worrying about what you don’t have and be thankful for what you do have! Jesus came to serve! He is THE Lord of lords! If the King came to serve, what makes you think you shouldn’t?
Be honest with yourself and stop playing the victim! Step up! Own your selfishness and then repent. Give thanks for everything. When you give thanks, you need to be serious about it. Mean it! Thank Hin for everything. Thank Him for the simple things. Thank Him for the clouds. Thank Him for your hands and feet if you have them. If you don’t, thank him for your heart and lungs. Thank Him for your house or apartment. If you don’t have one, thank Him for His plan to help you get one. Thank Him for your wife, if you don’t have one thank Him for the woman He made for you. Thank Him for the hair on your head, if you don’t have any, thank Him for saving money on hair cuts and shampoo.
Some of you might laugh, but this is the truth! IN ALL things, give thanks! God will never be out given. He will always give more than you. He will always provide. If you spend your time looking for things to be thankful for and ways to serve others, you won’t have time to feel sorry for yourself.
Stop being a whining, spoiled brat! Be a man! Step up!
Ask not what your Savior can do for you, but instead ask what you can do for your Savior!
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7
This includes all things given, especially thanks. Be cheerful when giving thanks! Be cheerful when giving service. Be cheerful when you give of your time, talent and treasure. Love your God first and with all that you are. Second, love your neighbor, also your enemy, as ypu love yourself. Gice your love cheerfully and with a thankful heart.
Be honest with yourself, He already knows the abundance of your heart so don’t even try to lie to Him.
I pray for peace, joy and thanksgiving in yiur hearts. For the abundance of Christ’s love and mercy and God’s Grace over you. As you have read this blog, I pray for convition and change in your heart. It is in the mighty name of Jesus I pray, in His authority, Amen.
